On July 19, 1969, just a day before the Moon landing, Steve ran an impressive 14:40 5k in a meet titled “USA v. USSR.” By the time the first steps were taken on the Moon, Pre was probably still looking back on his great race and looking forward to his upcoming year at his dream school: the University of Oregon. Little did the track and field world know what amazing feats were around the corner for the kid from Coos Bay that just graduated high school.
