May 2003 Webb Returns and Top World Times Set at Pre Classic Held in Hayward Field at The University of Oregon, the 29th annual Prefontaine Classic occured on May 24, 2003. Recognized as one of America's best track & field meets, this year's crowd of 11,097 witnessed some of the world's fastest times and the return of Alan Webb. Two years ago Webb became the first high schooler to run a sub 4 minute mile at The Prefontaine Classic. This year, he returned with a 3:58, five seconds slower than in 2001. May 27 2002 2002 Pre Classic SuccessfulTaking place at University of Oregon's track, and Prefontaine's favorite stadium, the 23rd annual Prefontaine Classic took place at Hayward Field on Sunday, May 26, 2002. The meet featured such stars as Marion Jones and mile world record holder, Hicham El Guerrouj. The world's best track & field meet only featured invited athletes who have been ranked in the top 50 worldwide within the past twelve months. November 2001 Hayward Field Repairs BeginHayward Field, The University of Oregon's outdoor track, and where Pre went nearly undefeated, is finally receiving its proper repairs. Early in 2001, the track's East Grandstands were thought to be too expensive for proper conservation. However, University of Oregon officials have slashed the estimated cost from over $1 million to roughly $300,000. According the contractors in charge, Lee Construction of Eugene, the price has been cut by using cost effective materials. |

September 16 2001 Prefontaine Memorial Run Occurs in Coos Bay On Saturday, September 15, 2001, the 22nd annual Prefontaine Memorial Run took place in Prefontaine's home town of Coos Bay, Oregon. The race was a tribute not only to the great Steve Prefontaine, but also to the victims of the attack on America. A moment of silence was given to all of those who lost their lives in the crisis. The track & field stadium needs major funding to fix their aging seats. World record-holder Hicham El Guerrouj made public on his experience in Eugene, Oregon, describing the great atmosphere and packed seats. His descriptions have helped others realize the importance of a stadium that could lose great events like the Prefontaine Classic. April 26 2001 Bill Dellinger inducted to Coaches Hall of Fame Bill Dellinger, an assistant coach to Bill Bowerman during Pre's years at Oregon, has been inducted into the Drake Relays Coaches Hall of Fame in Des Moines, Iowa. Although he was only an assistant coach, some believe Dellinger had a greater impact on Steve Prefontaine's life than Bill Bowerman. He took over University of Oregon's head cross country coach position after Bill Bowerman retired in 1973, and led one of the most successful programs in the nation. His coaching in Oregon's track & field program was also very outstanding. 18 of his runners broke American records, 15 qualified for the Olympics, and 12 won NCAA titles. read the press release |

June 2000 Pre Admirer, Gabe Jennings Wins 1500m in Olympic Trails Top Standford distance runner and huge Prefontaine fan, Gabe Jennings, won the 1500 meter race during prelims on day 1 and finals on day 3 of the Olympic Trails. Jennings, who has the same birthdate as Pre, said, "I want to bring back that fire and that rage that he was able to get on the track, and get fans into it, get them onto the track, and part of the experience." |

Although he was there to promote his next big film, there was some talk about "Without Limits" in the interview.
